Glastonbury favourite named Photographer of the Year

Last modified: April 7, 2011

Somerset-based Matt Cardy, one of the Festival’s most widely published photographers, was named Photographer of the Year at the 2010 Press Awards in London this week.

Congratulations to Matt, whose work can often been seen in local newspapers – and on this website – as well as the national papers. He was also a key contributor and organiser of last year’s acclaimed Glastonbury At 40 exhibition – shown at the Festival itself and at galleries throughout the South West.

“It is a real honour to win this prestigious award, given the incredibly tough competition, ” said Matt. “Although space didn’t allow Glastonbury Festival to feature in my portfolio, it remains one the highlights of my photographic calender.’

Organised by The Society of Editors, the Press Awards celebrates the best of British journalism, “recognising excellence in both individuals and teams in the media industry, across 25 different categories”.

There is another chance to see the Glastonbury at 40 exhibition at the Somerset Rural Life Museum in Glastonbury from May 14 until September 3.

An update from WaterAid

Last modified: April 7, 2011

If you were one of the thousands of people who visited the WaterAid stand, used a she-pee or checked out the composting loos up in Kings Meadow at Glastonbury Festival last year, thank you!

You helped to make 2010 WaterAid’s best year yet at Glastonbury. Not only did we collect 35,000 signatures raising vital awareness about the global water and sanitation crisis, but we also gave away record numbers of our stylish WaterAid tattoos and thousands of cups of much needed clean water.

WaterAid/ Suzanne Porter

Your support really is helping to change lives. Just one of the many places that WaterAid has been working in is a remote community in Nigeria, improving the sanitation and health of children in schools. Yahna Dinwur is pictured with a boy washing their hands in front of the latrine at their local primary school.

Yahna, a member of the hygiene club, had this to say about the impact of WaterAid’s work on her family: “We are taught to wash our hands before and after we eat and after we defecate. We are also taught the importance of bathing regularly, keeping our nails short and our hair neat and our clothes clean. All these things help to prevent disease. I have four brothers and three sisters and I remind them all to wash their hands regularly. Before it was common for one of us to get sick with the vomiting, but now it is much better. I feel much healthier.”

Following the success of 2010’s festival Barbara Frost, WaterAid’s Chief Executive, visited Michael and Emily Eavis during the summer to ask them about Glasto and all things water and sanitation!

Below is a snippet from their conversations…

“Sanitation is such a basic need for everyone, you would have thought it would have a higher profile than it does,” says Emily. “Glastonbury is one of the only times it seems that people make that realisation on such a large scale.” In fact, there is no better time to tell people about the 884 million people in the world without clean water and the 2.6 billion who have no toilet than when they’re thirsty and trying to find a decent loo!

The Eavises’ commitment to our work is really inspiring. You can read the whole interview with Michael and Emily on WaterAid’s website by clicking here.

Get on your bike, get your own camping field

Last modified: April 4, 2011

We’re very pleased to announce the launch of some new initiatives to encourage Festival-goers to come to this year’s Glastonbury by bicycle, as part of our new Green Traveller campaign. As well as reducing their carbon footprint and avoiding being stuck in car traffic queues, anyone who does arrive on their bike will get several benefits, including a free lock-up and an allocated campsite just for cyclists. We’ll even transport your luggage/camping gear to the Festival for you.

Plus, of course, like anyone arriving at this year’s Festival by public transport, they’ll get a Green Traveller card which gives discounts on food and T-shirts, as well as exclusive access to solar showers and compost toilets.

Even better, if you’re in Bristol or one of 30 towns within 20 miles of the site, you’ll be able to join an organised ride and have your luggage delivered to the Festival.

For full information, head over to our Arriving by Bike section.

Treetop Flyers win ETC 2011

Last modified: April 3, 2011

We’re very pleased to report that the winners of last night’s Emerging Talent Competition were Treetop Flyers, who’ve won a main stage slot at this year’s Festival. On a night of many impressive performances, the band’s vibrant folk-rock impressed the judges enough to bag them the win.

When revealing the winner, Michael Eavis also announced that all eight acts had managed to impress the various stage bookers enough to have won themselves a Festival slot. And rightly so. All of the acts really did prove themselves worthy of a slot.

Here are some of Jason Bryant’s photos from the night:
