Discarded Glastonbury wellies donated to Calais migrants

Last modified: September 3, 2015

wellies

This year, several hundred pairs of wellington boots were discarded at Glastonbury Festival. Those boots ended up in our recycling centre, where team member Liz Clegg had the idea of donating them to the migrants in Calais.

The boots were meticulously sized, paired and quality controlled by a group of volunteers and Liz recently transported more than 500 pairs to Calais, along with 2,000 unused rain ponchos and some first aid kits. Liz distributed them (and offered some first aid training) alongside Association Salam, a French charity which organises the distribution of food and clothing to the migrants.

While she was in Calais, Liz became aware that there is a massive issue at the refugee camp (nicknamed “the Jungle”), with rubbish collection and recycling. A team organised by the Calais Migrant Solidarity Facebook group is now travelling from the UK to instigate a system to enable the residents of the camp to manage the rubbish, and the Festival has donated bin bags to assist with this effort.

The refugees in Calais are living in desperate conditions, and we’re very pleased to be able to help support their basic humanitarian needs.

We are extremely proud to be in a position where we can support so many great causes. Thank you to everyone who comes to the Festival for making this possible.

Last modified: August 9, 2015

Here are Jason Bryant’s photos from last night’s excellent, sun-soaked 2015 Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza, where Ray Davies headlined, The Shires stepped up to main support (after Joan Armatrading was forced to withdraw) and The Drystones played a last minute opening set.

New exhibition of Festival photographs opens in Glastonbury town

Last modified: October 24, 2015

A new exhibition of classic Glastonbury Festival photographs – reproduced in giant wall-sized scale! – has opened today at the Assembly Rooms, Glastonbury. Entry is free and the exhibition runs until Saturday, 31st October, opening from 12-6pm each day (closed Sunday and Monday).

At the home of the very first Glastonbury arts’ celebration (founded by Rutland Boughton in 1914) more than fifty images chart the beginnings, the struggles and the enduring legend of the world’s largest open air green fields Festival.

Also displayed is a stunning large scale (3 metres) canvas reproduction of Stanley Donwood’s ‘Moons Over Pilton’ image from 2015, signed by the artist.

Free camping available at the Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza

Last modified: July 26, 2015

July 26 update: We are now at capacity for free camping for the Extravaganza. We are keeping a waiting list – please email extravaganza@glastonburyfestivals.co.uk – if you’d like to register your interest and we will let you know if a space becomes available.

—–

We’re pleased to announce details of the free camping which will be available to those attending this year’s Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza, allowing concert goers to enjoy a weekend in the ancient market town, with its famous Tor, beautiful Abbey and wide range of shops and cafés.

The Extravaganza, which is in its 19th year, will see Ray Davies, Joan Armatrading and The Shires performing at Glastonbury Abbey on Saturday, August 8th for the traditional summer evening which ends with a spectacular firework display.

Said Michael Eavis: “It will make a perfect weekend – the site we have earmarked is a lovely setting, in the shadows of the Tor in which to camp before attending what will be a fabulous concert with wonderful music.”

A bus will take Extravaganza-goers to the Abbey and back for the concert. The campsite will have security and toilet facilities and will be available from 10am on Friday August 7 until 12noon on Monday August 10. Parking will be available at the campsite.

Bookings for the campsite will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Once you’ve booked your Extravaganza ticket, please email extravaganza@glastonburyfestivals.co.uk with details of the number of ticket holders, tents and vehicles that you’d like to book for. You will then be contacted with more details.

Advance Glastonbury Extravaganza tickets cost £35 for adults and £20 for children aged five to 15 and are available from the abbey shop or online at www.glastonburyabbey.com/extravaganza2015.
