Glastonbury Festival sails with Greenpeace to Skye to launch ocean plastics campaign

Last modified: May 29, 2017

With just weeks to go before the Festival some of the Glastonbury team set sail with the Greeenpeace ship ‘Beluga’ to Skye to launch this year’s Ocean Plastics campaign. Greenpeace will spend three weeks in the Western Isles, right up until the end of June, taking sea samples and visiting remote beaches, to highlight the massive problem of plastic waste (both large and small) affecting some of the UK’s most beautiful locations.

We need to take action to stem the flow of plastic into our oceans. Sign Greenpeace’s petition now to show your support for a nationwide deposit return scheme for plastic bottles.

Step inside the ring of fire: Arcadia 2017

Last modified: May 27, 2017

Since the dawn of time, people have gathered around fire to celebrate the human spirit. From the timeless magnetism of a crackling campfire to a 50 tonne spider shooting 60 foot flames into the night sky, this primal rite has remained constant through the ages.

Born and bred on Glastonbury soil, Arcadia set off on a nomadic journey across continents. With a nationalist tide rising, the ultimate outsider, a giant fire breathing alien spider sought to explore the shared elements that bind us together, creating a vivid sensory world where people from all backgrounds and cultures could come together in an eruption of collective energy.

Arcadia return home to Worthy Farm after having circumnavigated the globe twice in 2016. Gleaming with intensity, the iconic Spider is built from repurposed military and industrial hardware, with each piece telling its own story and every last bolt charged with the energy of thousands.

Mirroring that ethos of transformation is Arcadia’s acclaimed Metamorphosis show which channels ideas of physical and metaphysical evolution. Metamorphosis sees aliens flying from the sky, new creatures born from spellbinding cocoons, baby spiders crawling overhead and 6 million volts of lightning played like an otherworldly musical instrument.

With a pulsating line-up throughout the weekend, Sunday sees a special early performance of Metamorphosis as the sun sets over the festival. A ceremonial moment to begin the final hours, Sunday is also the perfect time for kids to come see the show.

Step inside the ring of fire for an explosion of raw sensory mayhem, high octane connection, immersive symphonies and rampaging euphoria. This is Arcadia.

The unimaginable pain and suffering inflicted on the people who loved the victims of last night’s terrible events in Manchester is felt by us all with unbearable sadness.

British And Irish Lions rugby match won’t be screened at Festival

Last modified: May 18, 2017

We can confirm that there will be no official showing of the British And Irish Lions rugby match against New Zealand on the morning of Saturday 24th June, as screening it would interrupt preparation for that day’s Festival entertainment.

We anticipate that some Festival-goers will choose to watch the coverage of the match on their mobile devices or listen on a radio.

We’re pleased to announce that the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is attending Glastonbury Festival as our Health Charity of the Year for 2017.

The sight loss charity will be encouraging Festival-goers to look after their eyesight, and raise awareness of the importance of regular eye tests.

Sally Harvey, RNIB Chief Executive, said: “Glastonbury is such an iconic festival, and we’re excited to be part of the line-up for 2017. Thousands of music lovers will be descending on Worthy Farm next month, and we hope lots of them will come and see us to find out how to look after their eyes.

“Nearly half of sight loss is preventable, so our mission at Glastonbury will be to remind people of the importance of having regular eye tests in a fun way that taps into the sights and sounds of the Festival.”

Michael Eavis, founder of Glastonbury Festival, said: “As I’ve got older, I’ve become more and more aware of the importance of looking after my eyes, and I don’t want to miss a trick! In light of this, I’m delighted that we’re working with RNIB this year, and hope that lots of Festival-goers will stop by the charity’s stall near the Pyramid Stage to find out more about how they can protect their sight.”

Guess who’s back? The Unfairground

Last modified: May 15, 2017

Yes the Unfairground is back, the mind-altering zone for subversive, radical, art and music. Infused with equal measures of anarchist spirit and satirical wit, they believe the act of repurposing both ideas and salvaged material turns the unethical cycle of consumerism and wastefulness into a virtuous one.

Check out the line-up poster below + the treasure map listing the large scale installations and sideshow diversions, laid out within a full-on hedonistic rave.
